The Tailoring project is our second project based on economical empowerment for our members. Due to a partnership with The Green Elephant Foundation, we have secured several sewing machines from Dewe project Uganda. The aim of the project is to teach the members to be able to start tailoring as a skill set that will help them generate an income.
Project Goals
The project will start March 2021 with the aim of being a continuous project that will be available for all the members that join Tukundane Charity Organization.
- Teaching the members, a new skill set – Tailoring.
- Generate Income
- Teach the members a new skill set – self-promotion and marketing.
- Fight Stigma within the community – encourage members to work within the community.
- Create a safe working environment and space for the members.
Phase 1 – in the first 3 months the project aims to invest in an instructor that will come and teach the members, how to tailor, the different methods and different skill sets from learning how to sew buttons, make alterations etc.
Phase 2 – at this stage, the members will learn to make reusable pads for themselves and young girls. At this stage we will also be focusing on teaching young girls on making reusable pads and the importance of reusable pads to their hygiene, their education and keeping them in schools and the importance of reusable pads to the environment.
Phase 3 – as the members become more skilled at the tailoring craft, we will start to venture into making more complicated garments such as school jumpers, traditional clothing gomesi, which are very popular for special occasions and everyday wear, with the intension of generating demand in the community for the member’s services.
Phase 4 – working within the community to market and promote the Tukundane Charity members tailoring services, generating interest within schools, locally, while also educating young girls within the community about reusable pads, female hygiene and the possible opportunities available to them. Involving the members within the community plays a major role in fighting stigma that is evident in Uganda as a country and within the smaller communities. The opinion that HIV/AIDS is such an unspeakable taboo means the members often are scared to be open about their status or are stigmatized due to their status. Building that trust within the community, with Tukundane playing a larger role within the community will help to demolish these stereotyping that are so common within Ugandan communities.
